Have you considered an Honor College (Programs)?

What is Honor's College or Program?

PrepScholar states that an" honors college is a program that exceptional high school students can apply to and enroll in while completing a traditional bachelor’s degree".

Honors college is another on-campus school that forms part of the university’s educational system. Honor programs or Honor Colleges are essentially a Scholars academic extension of the academia campus experience.

While every honors college is different, many honors colleges offer enrolled students perks. Here are some unique opportunities that you can find at honors colleges and programs across the nation:

  • Courses with more rigorous and/or specialized curriculum that are exclusively open to honors college students

  • Smaller class sizes that can be conducted seminar-style, allowing students to interact more meaningfully

  • A smaller faculty-to-student ratio, giving students the opportunity to interact more frequently with professors and advisors

  • Housing and/or housing amenities that are reserved for honors students, giving honors students the opportunity to form a close-knit community

  • Priority registration, giving honors students a wider range of course options and the opportunity to curate a semester schedule that suits their needs

Having a high GPA and great test scores to qualify for admission will typcial afford students to qualify. Most honors programs have minimum score and GPA requirements that you must meet in order for your application to be considered.

Example: UGA Morehead's Honor Program & Georgia State's Honor Program

UGA

Georgia State

                                                                        CORE 1380 SAT (COMBINED)

                                                                        31 ACT (COMPOSITE)

Honors College vs. Honors Program

Honors colleges function as discrete schools within the larger university system, and honors programs aren’t separated into individual colleges within the university.

Lastly, there are SCHOLARSHIPS, stipends and study aboard opportunities offered to students that get accepted into Honor Colleges & Programs

Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs)

List of HBCUs These institutions are 2-year or 4-year programs, and either public or private.

HBCUs are Historically Black Colleges that were created to support students of color & minority. HBCUs are a source of accomplishment and great pride for the African American community as well as the entire nation.

The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, defines an HBCU as: “…any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association determined by the Secretary [of Education] to be a reliable authority as to the quality of training offered or is, according to such an agency or association, making reasonable progress toward accreditation.” HBCUs offer all students, regardless of race, an opportunity to develop their skills and talents. These institutions train young people who go on to serve domestically and internationally in the professions as entrepreneurs and in the public and private sectors. ED.gov/HBCU

The Black Common Application is available to students with a majority interested in applying to HBCU colleges & universities at a set one-time cost.
